iWeb Still Stinks

I decided to try iWeb again because the templates just look so much nicer and it’s less work than doing things by hand with SiteMaker. So what did I find?

  • Everything is positioned statically. If you delete something on the page, nothing flows to replace it, you have to move things manually.
  • You can’t set a standard footer that will appear on every page, you have to do it manually.
  • Image files only. You can’t link images with URLs (like my counter at the bottom of the page).
  • No HTML. While iWeb is supposed to prevent you from having to do this, why can’t I insert custom HTML without opening the published files in a text editor. If you want to add a referral link or JavaScript or Java or something else, you’ve got to do it by hand.
  • Photo pages are terrible. They hold 9 photos, don’t seem to link to larger copies of the photos (that I can find at least), and it’s all pre-created. You want to show 12 photos? You can add them easily, but the links you’ll have to add yourself. The title of the album is put on the page for you, but you can’t delete it so if you don’t want it you’re in trouble.
  • Buggy. Try this: go to a page in iWeb, open the media inspector and show a iPhoto album. Now what that’s up, open iPhoto and change the contents of the album. For me, that was enough to crash iWeb.

I guess I’ll just give up until version 2.0.
