So today was the big day. My family watched the keynote live as posted by Mac Rumors as I did, and I can’t wait for a iPhone to mess with. But unfortunately there were no Mac updates.
On the plus side, that meant that I could go pick up the latest Mac at a local store. So on my way home from work I picked up a 2.0 GHz 17″ iMac, Canon PIXMA iP4300 printer which was free after rebate, and an Apple Care protection plan for the computer.
It didn’t take long to setup the computer at all, and the packaging was fantastic in typical Apple style. But it didn’t take too long to run into… “issues”.
She did very well with the Dock. She asked how to get rid of some of the icons that she’d never need (like GarageBand) and I told her to drag them off, and she was impressed.
The initial setup went pretty well, but one of the first things my mom ran into was Safari. She opened it (after I reminded her it was for browsing the Internet) and she asked how to make Google the home page. Or at least that’s what she meant. The real question was “How do I open Google” (which is what lead us to Safari). Once Safari was open it went to Apple’s default home page for Macs (which, as she observed, was all about Apple). She then asked how to make it so it would go to Google when the computer was turned on.
At this point, I closed Safari and asked her to go to Google, which she was able to do after asking rather incredulously that she had to type in the WWWs and everything (Google has been the home page on the old computer for years). After she did that and got to Google, I showed her how to set it as the home page, and now she is set. She did notice the Google search bar.
Not much as been done yet. We haven’t setup the printer, and I haven’t moved over all the pictures and music and stuff. My family will be playing with it for the next few days, we’ll see what comes up.
Quote of the day? Said incredulously: “There are no card games?” I’ll have to find my mother some. Perhaps Apple should include some by default on their computers. This has been her biggest complaint by far so far.
