Last night it occurred to me that the writer’s strike in Hollywood has an unintended consequence for me. Other than listening to NPR, I get most all my news from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. NPR has covered the strike a little, but since the situation hasn’t changed it has only received a tiny mention recently (in the vein of “the strike is still going on, but they are back to the table today.”)
The problem is that The Daily Show and The Colbert Report have writers. Without them, the shows aren’t airing. That means that I have received basically no coverage at all of the strike, since it took out my big daily new sources. I realized the other day that I didn’t even know if the strike was still going on or if it had been settled.
I’m sympathetic to the writers too. But many younger people get their news the way I do… I wonder if they have realized the irony yet.
