The other day I finished Super Mario Galaxy. It was a terribly fun game (it took me 21 hours to get all 120 stars), and I’d say buy it. However it has been getting great reviews, and there are some little bits that I’d like to complain about… most of which I didn’t see in the reviews I read.
The first thing is kind of minor. The voice of the Toads is obnoxious.
The second thing, that I saw one review mention, is that the story told in the Library just doesn’t fit in the game. It is depressing. It just doesn’t fit.
The third, and my real complaint is the Pranksters Comets. Now the system in and of it’s self is rather good. It’s more interesting than just requiring me to collect 5 red coins and 100 yellow coins in every single level like in Mario 64. The purple coins are scattered in interesting places, and are not always there so it is something different.
The problem is that when you are playing a comet star, the screen is discolored. There is a color filter that tints everything. Worse, the corners of the screen are faded out on purpose. While this must serve to try to distinguish what you are doing from a normal star, the effect is has is to take a beautiful looking game and make it less colorful. The purple comet, in particular, can make things harder to see some times.
I’ve got to say, that design decision really threw me. I’d love to know why they did that.
