World of Goo

December 10th, 2008 · No Comments

This post is a quick (and long overdue) review of World of Goo, which is available in many places but I played on my Mac.

I’d like to start with a quick “thank you” to 2D Boy for making a Mac version. It wasn’t ready at the same time as the PC version, but if you bought the game then (which I didn’t) they gave you free access to the Mac beta until it was finished.

So in World of Goo you control little goo balls in what is physics game. It is, in many ways, reminiscent of Chronic Logic’s Pontifex and it’s sequel Bridge Construction Set (also Gish, all great games), but the gameplay feels much more informal and the challenges can be very different. The level design is quite varied and well done. Some levels get really difficult near the end, but the level of difficulty doesn’t change to fast or have many weird spikes. The graphics are a great 2D style that I really liked the look of.

I’m glad I bought it, I got quite a few hours out of it for the investment. $20 well spent.
