Plants vs Zombies

Continuing what seems to be game review week here on my site, my long overdue thoughts on Plants vs. Zombies from PopCap. When this game was announced, it looked interesting. The promotional music video enhanced my interest, and the Japanese version was fun as well.

So this was my second tower defense game (after Ninjatown. It wasn’t hard to get into at all, and by the end of the game you have dozens of plants to chose from, which can make your experience playing a given level very different depending on your choices. The plants and zombies are all pretty unique and have a great look to them.

It actually didn’t take me too long to beat the story mode of this game, which disappointed me. I was having a ton of fun, but wanted to keep going with more levels. I felt shortchanged.

Then I tried the mini-games.

Now I had played one or two during the course of the main game, just to try something different, but there is so much variety in them. In many ways, they outshine the main story mode and kept me playing for weeks after I finished story mode.

The only thing that didn’t seem to work for me was the zen garden. I thought it was for making money, but it’s hard to make much. It seems more like it was for collecting now, but I’m not sure. Either way, you’re given access to it pretty late in the story mode, which makes it feel harder since you’ve already missed out on so much you would have received if you had it when you went through story more. You can play story mode again though.

If you haven’t, go buy this game.
