Rhythm Heaven

About a month ago Amazon had, as one of their lightening deals, Rhythm Heaven for the DS and I ordered a copy.

I’m a big fan of rhythm games. I own PaRappa, UmJamma Lammy, Guitar Hero 1 & 2, Space Channel Five 1 & 2, and others. While a rather simple game in some ways (it’s basically the Wario Ware of music games) this game was quite a bit of fun.

Some of the games are really difficult. I had a ton of problems with Lockstep (which involves switching between the on and off beats) and Shoot-em-Up (space combat, to the beat!) was tougher than I expected. Still the songs in the game are quite catchy. At the end of each sequence of four games comes a Remix stage, which contains bits of all four games you just played, strung together, all to one song.

There is just so much to like in this game. Built-to-scale and Fillbots were fun. Glee Club, Fan Club, The Dazzles are all cute. Blue Birds tells the story of three birds joining the military under a hard nosed little duck commander. I’d love a wallpaper version of the little male lizard in Love Lizards, he’s sprite is amazingly cute.

Rhythm Heaven is a great game for playing for short periods on and off. It is designed as a bunch of bite sized chunks, making it easy to play when you’ve got a few free moments.
